| Date: 2008-05-04 Speaker: Leonard King Title: The Significance of Jesus' Baptism INTRODUCTION: Southern Baptists are often called "the people of the book" because of our belief that the Bible is the inspired word of God. The Bible is the source of our faith and practice as we live by its teachings. As Baptist we received our name because of our mode or method of baptism of believers by immersion. Dr. Robert G. Torbet, a long time professor of Church History at Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary, in his book The History of Baptists states that it is generally conceded that the early church practiced believers Baptism by immersion. The earliest manual was written @ 110 AD to teach new Christians describes baptism as being by immersion in running water. The Anabaptist, our spiritual forefathers, practiced the baptizing by immersion of all believers in Jesus Christ. The prefix "ana" in Greek means again or new. The earliest fellowship of Anabaptist was organized in Switzerland by Conrad Grebel, born in 1490. Because Anabaptist rejected the practice of infant baptism they were persecuted by the church and the government. Many were imprisoned and put on a bread and water diet. Several were put to death by drowning. Caroline and I have visited the "Water Church" in Zurich, Switzerland. Their Anabaptist pastor was drowned in the river a few meters from the church for baptizing believers. Balthasar Hubmaier (1481-1528) was a German Anabaptist born in Friedburg, Bavaria. His studies of the scriptures led him to believe and practice believer’s baptism. In 1512 he became a refuge in Switzerland fleeing the Austrian troops sent to arrest him for heresy. He wrote many pamphlets setting out the teachings of the Bible regarding believer’s baptism. During his brief two year ministry in exile over 6000 were converted in one year. Hubmaier was so successful preaching believers baptism that Prince Ferdinand had both he and his wife arrested for hearsay. They were returned to Austria where both of them were tried and sentenced to death. Hubmaier was burned to death on a stake. His wife was drowned in the Danube River. Many Anabaptist were put to death for practicing believer’s baptism. From 1527 to 1581 in Bavaria alone 223 Anabaptist were put to death as heretics. Our forefathers paid a great price so that we could practice believer’s baptism today. As the centuries passed the faithfulness and growth of Anabaptist resulted in the dropping of the "ana" and they became known and accepted as Baptist. As Baptist today we are free to observe believer’s Baptism as we will today by immersion. As a Baptist Church we believe that the Bible sets forth Baptism and the Lord’s Supper as the only two ordinances that Jesus gave for the church to observe. The Baptist Faith and Message adopted by the Southern Baptist Convention on May 9, 1963 states "Christian baptism is the immersion of a believer in water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. It is an act of obedience symbolizing the believer’s faith in a crucified, buried, and risen Saviour, the believer’s death to sin, the burial of the old life, and the resurrection to walk in newness of life in Christ Jesus. It is a testimony to the faith in the final resurrection of the dead." Our scripture lesson for this afternoon is in the first chapter of I. THE SETTING OF JESUS BAPTISM The voice of prophecy that had been silent for centuries was heard again as John the Baptist began preaching in the wilderness of Judea near the Jordan River. The purpose of his ministry was to prepare for the Day of the Lord. John the Baptist became the fulfillment of the messenger promised in by the prophet Isaiah. Mark begins his Gospel with Isaiah’s prophecy. Mark 1:1-3. 1.The beginning of the gospel about Jesus Christ, the Son of God. 2 It is written in Isaiah the prophet: "I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way"— 3 "a voice of one calling in the desert, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’ " A. John the Baptist was the forerunner of Christ. Mark 1:4-6 4 And so John came, baptizing in the desert region and preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. 6 John wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 1. John’s message was a clear call a clear call to repentance. Repentance means to turn from evil towards God. It is a change in man’s attitude toward God and conduct in life. The Greek word means a complete change of mind or going in the opposite direction. It is always more than penitence, a sorrow for wrong doings. It is more than remorse, regretting the sins you have committed. It is more than admitting you have not been living as you should. It is more than condemning yourself. The call to repentance issued by John was a call to a moral and spiritual revolution. It was a call for the complete breakdown of pride, of self-assurance and of the personal prestige. Repentance was a call to Godly living and the renouncing of self-will.2 John knew that there had to be repentance from sin if the world was to be ready for the coming of Jesus the Messiah. He called upon everyone to prepare for the coming Kingdom of God by repenting of sin. John’s message for the sinning world was simply repent. This meant that the sinners must do an about face in their lives. The prophet was proclaiming that every individual must change their way of living in preparation for the coming of Christ. If they did not repent and change their way of sinful living they would face of impending judgment of God. Today repentance and faith in Christ is the only way to avoid God’s judgment upon sin. Mankind still must change the direction of their lives away from their evil ways and seek God through faith in Christ. For we too face the judgment of him whom John prophesied was coming to establish the Kingdom of God. 2. John insisted that everyone must make a confession of sin. This included the most religious of the Jews. Multitudes of Jerusalem and Judea flocked to the Judean desert to hear this voice of God. Many heard the challenge to repent and followed this by confessing their sins. Confession means ‘to avow openly’ to acknowledge that they had sinned in the sight of God.3 3. John prophesied the coming of the Messiah, the Son of God who would fulfill the message that John was preaching. The coming one would deliver all who repented of their sins. John’s mission was to introduce Jesus as the one who was coming from God. John confessed that he was not worthy to perform the tasks of a servant by untying the sandals of the Messiah that was to come after him. In Mark 1:7-8 John was pointing beyond himself as he sought to prepare men for the coming One. 7 And this was his message: "After me will come one more powerful than I, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. 8 I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." B. Those who responded to John’s message of repentance were baptized. Baptism was as a concrete expression of their new commitment to be ready for the coming of Christ. 1. John’s Baptism was a dramatic demonstration of repentance and outward confession of sin and a symbolic preparation for the New Age of the coming Messiah. 2. John baptism of repentant sinners symbolized that those baptized were beginning anew in their life by living for God. They were to live their faith and be ready for the Baptism which would come through faith and commitment to Christ the coming Mesiah.4 3. Through John, God was calling for a new decision and direction for all mankind. Israel should remember that they had crossed the Jordan River into the land of promise under Joshua.5 Again a voice in the wilderness was leading them to the brink of Jordan where they awaited entry into the promised land of the new age of the coming Christ. Thus John was calling upon everyone to create a New Israel of God by preparing for the coming of the Christ the Messiah. C. Jesus recognized in John as the messianic herald who had come to prepare the way. 1. Jesus came to be baptized of John in the Jordan River. Mark 1:9 9 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. Jesus was baptized to demonstrate his agreement with the message John was preaching. Jesus did not come as a repentant sinner but with a knowledge that he was to establish the Kingdom of God thus fulfilling the prophecy of Elijah and John. Jesus was the coming Messiah that was to establish the Kingdom of God. God was anointing Jesus as the promised Messiah. 2. Jesus through his baptism was deliberately committing himself to participate in that movement which looked for the speedy consummation of God’s promises. It was a moment of identification.6 John the Baptist began a great movement of people back to God and Jesus was committing himself to this movement. Jesus wasn’t submitting to baptism by John for his sake but for the sake of others. This submission by Jesus to Baptism by John was a mark of his humbleness and greatness. 3. Jesus began his earthly ministry with his baptism by John. It was an act of dedicating himself to his public ministry. Jesus had lived thirty in Nazareth preparing for his ministry as the Son of God. He had faithfully discharged his duties in preparing for his for this moment. Jesus was waiting for the sign from God the Father that the time had come to launch his ministry. He saw the emergence of John as that sign. When Jesus comes to John it was a moment of decision. Jesus was making known his decision to begin his public ministry by associating himself with the ministry of John the Baptist. Jesus was to do the ministry of the coming Messiah. He was fulfilling John’s prophecies. Each life has moments of decision which can be accepted or rejected. To accept is to succeed in life and to reject is to fail. Oxenham the poet wrote: To every man there openeth A way and ways and a way; The high soul treads the high way, And the low soul groups the low, And in between on the misty flats, The rest drift to and fro.8 The drifting life will never be a happy or a fulfilled life. Jesus knew when John emerged that the moment of decision had arrived for him. Jesus of Nazareth had to begin the ministry that he was sent by His Heavenly Father to do. II. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF JESUS’ BAPTISM A. The Significance of Jesus is found in the meaning of each detail.9 1. Mark 1:10a "As Jesus was coming up out of the water". This doesn’t leave any doubt that Jesus had walked into the Jordan to be baptized by John. Some scholars see a symbolism here of the Jews passing through the Jordan to the Promised Land. The baptism of Jesus is symbolizing the beginning of the true Promised Land. It is also a validation of John the Baptist’s ministry and the fulfillment of the prophecy of the coming Messiah who would usher in God’s Kingdom. 2. Mark 1:10b"He saw heaven being torn open" indicates that during his baptism Jesus experienced an immediate and direct revelation from God. The verb, "being torn open" is a very forceful word that is also a metaphor for God’s breaking into human experience to deliver His people Contrast this to the Jewish belief that man could hear only the echo of the voice of God. Here Jesus hears direct from the throne of God the voice of God and not the echo or daughter of his voice. 3. Mark 1:10c "And the Spirit descending on him like a dove". Just as John had prophesized the Baptism of the Spirit so we have another testimony to the fact that Jesus was the one to fulfill God’s plan of salvation for sinful mankind. The dove is also the symbol of purity. Jesus was endowed with the Spirit and would create new mankind for fellowship with God. These brief details of Jesus’ baptism indicate that it was the occasion on which his messianic mission as Christ the Messiah was launched. B. The meaning of Jesus mission is found in the voice from the opened heavens. Mark 1:11- And a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased." God here uses two phrases from the Old Testament Scriptures to express his will to Jesus. The first announcement from God is You are my Son, whom I love is from the Psalms 2:7. I will proclaim the decree of the Lord: He said to me, "You are my Son; today I have become your Father. These is the opening words of the coronation formula for a king. God is announcing that his Son shall reign as king in triumph and glory. The second announcement is from Isaiah 42:1 "Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him and he will bring justice to the nations. This is the concluding words of the ordination formula of the servant who is sent forth to establish justice in the earth even at the cost of suffering. The mission of Jesus is to both as Messianic Son and the Suffering Servant.10 In his baptismal experience God confirmed Jesus’ conviction that he had been anointed as Son of God to be both the Messiah and Suffering Servant to bring deliverance and glory for those who received Him. He would do this by serving, by suffering and by being rejected. All he would do would be with God’s approval. Jesus right to be the Messiah was to obey his heavenly father. His only weapon was selfless love. In a world of sin this meant his only throne would be a cross.11 III. The Significance of Jesus Baptism for others. Jesus was baptized that he might be acknowledged as a Messianic king whose mission was to establish God’s rule in the affairs of man. He was the true son of God and servant of the Lord. A.Matthew’s Gospel lets us know John the Baptist felt unworthy in the presence of Jesus. Matthew 3:14-15 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" 15 Jesus replied, "Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness." Then John consented. Jesus was baptized to identify himself with the sinner. He wanted to make the burden of wayward Israel his burden, their shame his shame. Like the Servant of Isaiah he would be ‘Numbered with the transgressors’. Jesus was baptized for the same reason that he would later eat with sinners and associate with the people of the land. For the same reason he would die between two thieves on the cross. That he might identify himself with the sinner. ‘Surely he hath borne our grief’s and carried our sorrows.’ B. The baptism of Jesus reveals something revolutionary about the way a man meets God. Many today like the Jews of Jesus’ time fail to recognize that the way to God is repentance and faith in Jesus. They are relying on their works and their sense of personal spiritual achievement. Jesus Baptism affirms that we may meet Christ the Messiah when we repent and confess our sins. Through faith we can then go to the waters of baptism with Christ at our side. The true King of the Jews was not in Jerusalem but in the Jordan river. C. The Baptism of Jesus is an acted parable of deliverance. Self- improvements might make a man a better neighbor but it will not give him peace of soul. Once we have repented of sin and through faith in Christ God does something for us and with us. Christians are not perfect and sometimes lapse into sin. Christ never promised a transformation to end all our shortcomings. He has promised something better. He will suffer with us, walk with us, forgive us and guide us as we follow him. Robert has made his decision for Christ and will be baptized this afternoon. Listen to his testimony and ask yourself do you need to make a decision for Christ today? |
