| Date: 2009-01-25 Speaker: Jakob Magiera Title: Cherish the Family If you had asked me 5,7, even 10 years ago what I wanted to do after finishing my studies, one of my possible answers could have been to go to another country, possibly the USA. Even Italy didn't seem so absurd, since I had taken an Italian language course at university and spent a wonderful vacation there. I enjoyed having moved out from home, being independent and free. I could do with my life what I wanted, who needs family? The internet was transforming western society more and more and I, too, had a number of online friends whom I also visited, both in Germany and the Netherlands. Family, what an old-fashioned concept, right? Isn't this church a living statement to this transformation within our society? How many of you even have relatives within the city (other than spouses or children)? Yet, here I am in 2009. I have been married for 7 years, with children for 3 years, only lived in another country for one year, and that was 15 years ago. Looks like I've grown roots in this place, in Berlin. Indeed, I have all of my immediate family here. My parents, my siblings, Heidi's parents and her siblings, too. Plus spouses and children. What happened? Where has all my drive for independence and freedom gone? The answer is simple: first I found a job in the city, then we had kids. And our parents enjoyed them. And we enjoyed the fact that they enjoyed them. And the kids enjoyed their enjoying them. That's a lot of joy combined. Business people talk about a win-win situation. I would even call it a win-win-win situation since there are three parties involved. I can't tell you exactly when it was that this occurred to me, but at some point God revealed a very important truth to me, namely there are only two things in life that are really important: your relationship with God and your relationship with other people. Mt. 22:29-31: 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself. 'There is no commandment greater than these." (NIV) Hear O Isreal! Hear, O Church! If you every listened, let it be now! There is no commandment greater than these! God is all about relationships. If you are ever in a situation in your life where you have to make important decisions regarding the future, make sure to take your relationships into account. At the end of the day, at the end of the year and at the end of your life, nothing will matter more than those. We live in a country that, I believe, doesn't really honor those principles. It is not hard to see that Germany isn't exactly a Christian nation anymore, but I would also venture to say that, and especially in Berlin, relationships don't have enough priority. After having spent a year in the USA, coming home to Berlin was a shock for me. „Does everyone hate me here or something?“, I thought. I would also venture to say that one of the primary things that has drawn us away from relationships is our attachment to stuff, to things money can buy. I recently read an article in the newspaper that talked about the alarming level of rising poverty in Germany. Already 6% of the population were below the line of poverty. For a couple with 2 children, that line of poverty was drawn at 1800 EUR net income per month. Forgive me if I sound arrogant, but poverty looks different. Ask the people from our church who went to India last year. Ask the people who live in huts made of corrugated sheet metal, where 10 people live on 15 square meters. What do such poor people have, what would they tell you? I am sure that most of them, except for their dear lives they are holding on to, would talk about their families. How is it with us? Do we honor our families, our fathers and mothers, our brothers and sisters, our friends? Do we take time to be with them? What is it that drives us to want to go to „higher grounds“ to achieve something in life, something that will make us memorable to the world and neglect our families in the process? I also believe that especially men suffer from this syndrome. Many of us can get very absorbed in our jobs and our hobbies. But at the end of the day, make sure your priorities are straight. Look at your relationships: are you at peace? Did you honor your friends, your family members, did you give them the time they needed, to know you love them? One of the most influential verses in my life is found in Ephesians: Ephesians 4:26: "In your anger do not sin": Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold (NIV) Whether your house is standing or not, whether you have food or not, whether you have a job or not, make sure your relationships are intact, especially with your family – they are going to stick around for a while. I remember one time Heidi had wanted to bake a cake and somehow or other, the kids were keeping her from progressing very well. I wasn't very supportive (quite the contrary). Frustration built up, there was a little scene and we both ended up hurting each other's feelings. A little later, I went to her to apologize, and then something amazing happened: she also apologized to me. God, that was beautiful. It is amazing to experience two individuals humbling themselves before each other. There are few miracles as great as a relationship restored. Who in this room would say he or she is not busy? Anybody got some spare time, anybody bored? Talk to me after the service, I have about a thousand things you can do for me. Isn't it all about the doing? Let me just get this thing done. I sometimes like to joke with my wife about what we would put on our grave stones. Whenever I have the feeling she's too much into getting things done I mention her gravestone, and I say to her: „When we are dead and buried on some graveyard, I can see our tombstones standing peacefully, people reading the inscriptions as they meander by. Yours is going to read 'Dann haben wir das auch erledigt.'“ ('So, this is done, too.') When is the last time you had a Sabbath Sunday (or really any day of the week)? I don't know about you, but there are an awful lot of things that need to be taken care of every Sunday. Did I mention we could use more volunteers for the children's Sunday School? Oh, we need some more ushers as well. Additionally, there's some need in... Some things need to get done. Sometimes you don't need to get anything done. Psalm 46:10: Be still, and know that I am God (NIV) You may have heard the phrase „Don't just stand there, do something!“ I like the inverse „Don't just do something, stand there!“. Luke 10:38-42: As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!" "Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her."(NIV) Today Pastor Scott and Laurie are taking a Sabbath weekend, and I commend them for doing so. I don't want our pastor to be all about getting things done. I want him to grow in his relationship with his wife and take time away from church to do that. I've been talking about relationships, especially with family. Let us cherish those. Let us cherish the relationships we have here in the church. One last note: We are born into the world as physical beings and we experience the physical world bound by time and space. Those are the things of science, the hard and verifiable facts. That is what we deal with every day. And this is still the world that God created. However, the world has fallen. We are in danger of getting entangled in this physical world, in the everyday things. And let me tell you, this entanglement in the physical intensifies tremendously when you have children. Therein lies a danger. We can lose sight of the heavenly. You don't want to wake up one day and think „Did I just change diapers for 20 years“? Life is more than just growing up to get a good job and have a nice house. I'll close with Jesus' words: Matthew 6:33: But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (NIV) |
