Experiencing the Word: Why Did Jesus Come?

You don’t have to be a nuclear physicist to conclude something is not right with the world!

Today’s headlines are a stark reminder that there’s a lot of bad news.  Violence, war, abuse, corruption, and greed dominate the news, and that’s only page one!  No telling what a look at local reports might reveal.

The truth of the matter is that the news doesn’t get any better when you get closer to home.  In fact, I can’t get beyond my  own heart.  Within my own being, I am keenly aware of my own shortcomings!  I find myself thinking things that are unbecoming.  I wrestle with choices between right and wrong in my own will.  I catch myself doing things that don’t measure up to my own expectations a s noble…or ignoble…as those expectation may be.

Here’s my conclusion:  the heart of the problem is a problem of my heart!  Something is NOT right with the world…and it’s ME…and YOU.  Yes, God created us in his image, but we introduced a problem that affects everyone of us and every dimension of our world.  The Bible calls it sin.

Sin is not a popular subject in today’s world, but a necessary topic if we are to address the world’s problems. Take care of the problem of sin and it will affect the whole world.  And that’s why Jesus came!  He came because of our problem of sin.  Look through Sunday’s sermon slides to explore what the Bible says about our sin.  You’ll also find some helpful comments in response to these common questions:

  • If God is a good God, how does he allow such suffering?
  • How can a loving God send anyone to hell?
